Data Warehouse
- Operational data (and metadata) is
extracted from various production, external, and other databases, cleaned and
combined in a database.
Data Marts
- Subsets of a data warehouse
containing data for a functional area’s use. Usually includes tools for ease
of use by operational managers.
Data Mining
- “Data mining is the application of
statistical techniques to find patterns and relationships among data for
classification and prediction.”
- Unsupervised data mining – no model
or hypothesis; allow data to speak for itself, usually using cluster analysis
or similar techniques.
- Supervised data mining – model or
hypothesis in advance; statistical techniques used to test and determine
parameters.
- Market basket analysis – analyzes
what products are purchased together for suggestive selling purposes.
Business Analytics
- The use of data warehouses, business
intelligence and analytical packages to improve business performance.
