E-mail Job Applications

Many job applicants are using the Internet today to contact potential employers. If you are one of these, don't make the common mistakes that cause your application to get the delete key. A little effort can greatly increase the chances that your resume will be read.

Pay attention to your e-mail address. We have noted many people have highly personalized e-mail addresses such as "LoveU," "FoxyGirl," "FastCars," and "ImThe One." Is this really the impression you want to leave with a potential new employer? Get a professional sounding e-mail address - in most cases your name is probably best.

Secondly, surveys show many people are looking for a new job using their current employer's computer system. Again, it doesn't leave a great impression with a future boss if you are using your current work e-mail.

Finally, is that e-mail full of spelling errors and other mistakes? It is amazing the number of e-mails we receive where an applicant has spent the time to prepare a quality resume to attach, but the e-mail cover is practically unintelligible. It is a good idea to send the e-mail to yourself first and then read it and make sure it presents you in your best light.

In summary, think before sending out e-mail. Be sure it conveys a professional and business-like impression to the receiver. You only get one chance to make a good first impression.
