Project 2 - Product Design Video
Tri-State Industries, Inc. – 1999
Due Sunday April 11, 2004 prior to midnight

Answer all questions specifically in relation to the information presented in the video and as it applies to this specific organization. No theoretical answers or quotes from the book. Be clear and specific. Number your answers.

For purposes of this project, single space your answers with one blank line between questions. Prepare in Microsoft Word and e-mail as an attachment to me rkulzick@stu.edu prior to the deadline. No late papers accepted. Indicate your name(s) on the paper. Be sure to place a subject on your e-mail and indicate in the text what specifically is attached.  

1. What are the various sources of new product ideas? As stated in the video? Explain at least two more sources.

2. What are this company’s products? Who are their customers? Explain.

3. In the design process, explain specifically, with examples:

            A. Importance of the customer view, including specific factors of importance to their customers. How did these general factors specifically influence the design at Tri-State?

            B. Explain the role of process limitations and cost considerations in the design. Discuss specific examples from the video.

4. How long did it take to design the trailer in the video example?

5. Discuss the use of both CAD and collaborative design in this example. Be specific and complete.

6. Discuss the role of prototyping and trial and error in the design process at Tri-State. Was this necessary, or could better approaches been used in the case discussed.

7. After the design was approved, production processes were set up. What basic manufacturing process was used? How was it implemented in this case?
