Project 4 - Research & Development
Due Sunday April 25, 2004 prior to midnight

For purposes of this project, single space your answers with one blank line between questions. Prepare in Microsoft Word and e-mail as an attachment to me rkulzick@stu.edu prior to the deadline. No late papers accepted. Indicate your name(s) on the paper. Be sure to place a subject on your e-mail and indicate in the text what specifically is attached.

The key to innovative new products and services is research and development.

Take a tour of your assigned two of the following corporate R&D labs:

1.    A. Briefly summarize how each lab began
        B. Briefly note early discoveries, types of researchers, and organizational culture.

2.    A. What is the key to successful R&D at each lab?
        B. How are the two labs different from one another?

3.    A. Summarize the research direction and theme that each lab is currently following. Give examples.
        B. For ea h lab, is their research more focused on product or process development? Support your position with examples.

4.    Describe one current research project from each lab and describe in more detail.

5.     A government research lab has different goals and objectives than corporate labs. Explore the Sandia National Laboratory. Access About Sandia and Capabilities.
        A. Why was this research center formed?
        B. What types of research does it pursue?
        C. Describe two current projects in more detail.
