COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course is an independent, self-paced study of accounting principles and practices for those with no previous background in accounting. The collection, reporting and interpretation of the financial data of modern business firms are emphasized. As a one-credit-hour-course, it is a prerequisite for MBA students who have not completed ACC 530 or its equivalent.

The objectives of this course are to:
1. Become conversant with "key terms" in financial accounting; and
2. Provide a broad managerial overview of financial accounting and to introduce the student to different forms of financial analysis. The overview will include: recording transactions, accruing revenues and expenses, preparing financial statements, understanding revenue and expense patterns, evaluating balance sheet account changes, analyzing the statement of cash flows and using financial ratios to make business decisions.

The text is available in either a hardcopy or online version, based on your preference.

When ordering your materials, please identify yourself as a St. Thomas University student so Ivy Software will send you a password with your book that will allow you to access its website for taking the final comprehensive exam for this course. Do not purchase a used book or from any source except Ivy Software because of the password final exam requirement.

    Internet access is required. This is most convenient if from your home, however, the University does provide such access to students from the computer lab located on the second floor of the library. You are required to check my web site: Kulzick.com/stu at least weekly for updates and further information regarding the course.

YOU are responsible for monitoring your progress and dropping in a timely manner if appropriate. DROP DEADLINES ARE ENFORCED. If you do not complete this course by the stated deadline, you will receive a "NP".

Integrity. No professional can maintain credibility using another's work, whether that person be a fellow student or a published writer. All work is to be SOLELY and COMPLETELY done by the individual student. READ THE ATTACHED STATEMENT ON ACADEMIC DISHONESTY. Copying (including rephrasing) even one sentence without proper attribution constitutes plagiarism. A student whose paper is copied is equally at fault as those who do the copying. Keep your work confidential and to yourself! Not everyone is as honest as you are. Students should carefully read, understand and abide by the attached statement and the Graduate School Policy on Academic Conduct in the current catalog and student handbook.

Taking the final exam more than two (2) times in one day or more than seven times in total constitutes cheating in this course and will result in a failure.

Class Attendance & Participation. There are no classes. If you are having a problem with a particular aspect of the course material, contact me by e-mail.

The University requires that weekly attendance be taken and submitted. To meet this requirement, you are required to send an email to the professor every week stating that you have read my weekly email and are working on the course.

Tests. There is an online test at the end - see the welcome letter.

GRADING:

100%    Final exam

P = 82.5 - 100
NP = 0 - 82.4

You MUST receive at least an 82.5 to complete this course. Lower grades are not acceptable for this course. Note limitations on retaking the exam. lso note, you MUST complete BOTH the update and the final exam.
