Paper Requirements
Fraud Seminar - 03/M1

What is the purpose of the paper?

What should the paper contain?

1. The type of fraud you are covering.

2. Data and support for why this is an important issue for management in your victim (or perpetrator) organization. Include trends, perhaps an example or two.

3. An explanation of how the fraud typically works. Be organized and systematic in this, do not ramble. Use headings and an organized structure. Be sure you specifically address what makes this fraud (and not, for example, a larceny or theft).

4. Specific ways for an organization to prevent this type of fraud. You must include and discuss at least two specific ways that primarily address each of the following (a total of at least six), including specifically how they would act to prevent or reduce this particular type of fraud.

A. Perceived pressure
B. Rationalization
C. Perceived opportunity

5. Specific ways for an organization to detect this type of fraud when prevention fails. You must include and discuss at least four specific detection methods, including specifically how they would detect this particular type of fraud.

Where will I find this information?

As a student, you can do web searches through the library using your STU e-mail login. ABI and Infotrack databases would be the most likely sources as well as the library catalog. You can, of course also search on the general web. Additionally, the library has a number of good books on the subject including some I have placed on reserve (check at the front desk).

The textbook contains significant information on many types of fraud. The Allen book also is an excellent source for this paper. You could talk to people you know in the industry or your organization (be sure to reference them) and ask questions of our guest speakers. I will probably also be covering in class at least something relating to your paper unless it is a very unusual topic.

How long should it be?

Probably 10 to 15 pages (not including the cover page and reference page). At least 60% should deal with subjects 4 and 5 in the outline above. The key factors are whether you cover the subjects required, demonstrate you understand what you are writing about, and can appropriately apply what you learned in the course.

What's the format?

Papers must be in APA format. You must reference any idea that is not yours in the paper and include on the reference page. Use the General button on the left to get more info, samples and FAQs on APA references. You must have a cover page which includes the title, your name, the date, my name, and the course number.

When is it due?

No later than 6:00 PM January 17th.

How should I submit it?

You must e-mail it to me as an attachment in Word 97 format (if you have newer versions or another word processing program, just select to save it in Word 97 format when you "save as". My e-mail address is rkulzick@stu.edu Be sure you type your name and a sentence on the e-mail so I can differentiate your paper from a virus or spam message. I will acknowledge receipt after I print it out and make sure everything is there. If you don't get an acknowledgement, follow up. Papers left in my box, mailed, etc. will not be accepted.
