FAQ
Empire Fire & Marine Insurance - 1999

Note that these responses are not official additions to the questions; only explanations of what is required to answer them. Be sure you read the question and understand it fully before answering.

2.A.  You ask how does EIM differ from normal computer systems?  When you refer to normal computer systems what do you mean?

Normal alphanumeric-based computer systems of all types as have been discussed throughout the entire course.

In my class notes, the term "Electronic Document Management" is followed "Record Management" in parentheses. For the purpose of addressing the Empire Fire and Marine case, are these two terms interchangeable? I ask this because your handout: "Information, Records, and Electronic Document Management" refers specifically to EDM, but not ERM.

For purposes of the case, I would use the terms as defined in the handout Records Management. The definitions on the handout Information, Records, and Electronic Document Management provide additional information. The reference to Electronic Document Management on the second handout provides something between EIM and ERM on the first handout since it includes more than EIM, but does not specifically include electronic records. Sorry for the confusion, but various individuals and organizations have varying definitions.

3.A.  When I look for Paper-based systems in workflow management should I focus on what is in the case on the old system or, found out outside information on it?

Both, as is necessary to explain fully and answer the question.

4.  For question #4, should we use the cutover methods from your notes or should we use the types mentioned in the text page# 351-352.

Use the definitions from the notes.  IS Cutover Approaches

For questions 1B, 2C, and 4D, How do I support them?, based on advantages and disadvantages?  with facts and recommendations?

These questions are a very important part of the course. They relate to your being able to relate the theory in the course (the first part of each of those questions) to a practical application. Just re-listing the advantages or disadvantages from an earlier part is not the question. Put yourself in the position of someone working for the company. Did the company make the right choice or not? Why?
You need to relate the company's specific situation at that time to the particular approach. For example, what were their goals? how much time did they have? what were they trying to accomplish? were particular disadvantages or advantages of great importance to them? why? How did each of these things relate to the approach they chose.

4A and 4C. Any suggestions on how to answer this?

I suggest that you (1) define the term, (2) state your answer, and (3) relate the facts in the case to the specific elements of the definition to support your answer. Include specific examples, if appropriate.
