PCs can:

• Provide superior software applications
• Support small, stand-alone applications
• Provide controller, consistent response time
• Increase applications flexibility
• Bypass IS for certain applications
• Reduce some of the hidden backlog

PCs cannot:

• Process large amounts of data
• Communicate large files quickly
• Support large transaction-based systems
• Automatically backup files
• Print large amounts of data rapidly
• Rapidly upload/download to/from larger computers
• Reduce mainframe maintenance backlogs
• Maintain large databases

This analysis refers to standalone PCs and small peer-to-peer networks, not client/server LANs.
