Guest Speaker Questions
Guest speakers are an
important part of the course and your performance before and during guest
speakers is the majority part of your participation grade.
There are three objectives
of having guest speakers in this course:
1. Discuss practical applications and aspects of materials covered in the course
2. Provide students with a view toward potential career paths and employers
3. Provide successful professional role models for students
To optimize the academic
benefit of guest speakers, it is important that you ask appropriate questions
during the question period each guest speaker will provide.
#1 - Every week there is a guest speaker–
You must prepare two (2)
questions and submit them by e-mail no later than the Sunday before class.
Failure to submit timely is a zero (no
grades are dropped).
These should be
professional and appropriate to the specific speaker, their organization, and
their topic. Personal or political questions are not acceptable, nor are
questions off the subject, or purpose of the speaker. The purpose of asking your
questions should generally relate to the objectives of having guest speakers
(above).
Links that provide
additional information about the speaker and/or their organization are generally
provided in the online course schedule.
Questions should be in the body of the email (as should your name). Do not
submit as attachments. These will be graded based on originality,
appropriateness and clarity. Be sure you receive an acknowledgement from me
within 24 hours.
#2 - At least once in the first half of the
course and once in the second half –
Ask
at least one appropriate question of the speaker and follow-up if appropriate.
Remember that your behavior and professionalism reflects upon not only yourself,
