Note that these responses are not official additions to the questions; only explanations of what is required to answer them. Be sure you read the question and understand it fully before answering.
1. B. I have a question regarding question 1.B. in the case questions. It says that the shortcoming with the mission is according to theory in the text and covered in class. Do you have to relate the shortcoming of the mission in the case to all 9 components in the text, or can you relate it only to the components in the handout that was given to us regarding missions if we think that is sufficient? What do you recommend?
You should focus first on the handout (the short list). If you cannot resolve an answer there, then go to the text's long list.
I would like to know what OSHA means, (Page C211, first goal under People ).
Occupational Safety and Health Administration - a federal government agency that regulates workplace safety. In the goal refers to workplace accidents that are serious enough to require reporting on an internal, government mandated reporting form.
2. B. What does "appropriate" mean?
Appropriate means that you can relate it back to the mission. You must specifically demonstrate this. All business objectives must relate back to the mission, according to theory on mission-objectives-strategy.
2. C. Any suggestions for re-writing the objectives?
When you are done, go back to 2a. Your objectives MUST meet ALL the criteria you have spelled out for a business objective. Critique them yourself the same as you did the original ones. If they do not meet all the criteria and are not appropriate, you need to re-write them until they do.
3. B. I lost a lot of points on Question 3b. You wrote that my answers were incomplete. What did I do wrong?
Reread the question. As discussed in class, I expect a FULL ANALYSIS and COMPLETE answer to all parts of the question. Your answer, a couple of sentences on each part, does not represent a FULL analysis. Many parts of the question are completely ignored; the answers are vague (e.g., "they are consistent" is way too vague, you need to discuss specifically how they are consistent); there are few examples; and no relation of your answers back to Rummelt's definitions of each term. A full analysis generally would require at least a page or so on each section.
3. B. In regards to the Purdue Farms case study, does question 3.B. refer to the strategies I listed in question 3.A.?
Yes.
5. A. I have a question concerning question #5, where have to discuss our strategy. When we select a strategy. For example we are moving our company to another city. "hypothetical" Would we have to tell you the financials, dates of the move, how we would make the move, Would we keep the same staff, etc. How in depth does this question have to be, 2 pages, 3, 4, etc.
No, you do not need to explain implementation. However, you can't just say move to another city. You would need to specify the city and why it is better, etc. Implementation is not the issue, but you must have a specific strategy and COMPLETELY support why this specific strategy (e.g. move from Chicago to Atlanta) and why this is best. This usually takes several pages. Actual length depends on your writing. For an example see: Sample Question 4 for BUS 704
