What Is Strategy?

For purposes of this course, a strategy recommendation in a case setting must meet certain criteria:

It is:

Specific

Actionable – can be done

Answers what?

Answers how?

Business and/or corporate level

Multi-functional

Company oriented

Long-term – at least 3 to 5 years

Understandable and clearly stated

One and only one strategy

Provides direction

A means to accomplish the mission

Based on the time of the case

It is NOT:

Generic or vague

A tool recommendation

A theory

A study or research

Functional

Owner or employee oriented

Academic

Confused, lack of focus, all encompassing

Implementation

Fixes functional problems

Uses technologies and/or facts not known at time of case

In general, business strategies:

Deal with one of the four factors in the mission as they

  relate to the four market factors
