Wide Area Networks

Definition

A computer network than spans a relatively large geographical area. WANs are often used to connect two or more networks. The largest WAN is the Internet. (Webopedia, 2000)

    Modem

MOdulator-DEModulator. A device or program that converts a computer's digital data to an analog signal (and vice-versa). Generally modems are used to transmit data over telephone lines.

    Multiplexor (MUX)

A device that combines multiple signals for transmission over one channel. Requires a demultiplexor to separate the signal after transmission. Both may be combined in one device to allow both transmission and receiving.

    Remote intelligent controller

An intelligent device that allows the host computer to control workstations in either a local or remote environment.

    Communications controller

A device attached directly to the host computer bus that manages communications.

    Front-end processor
