Should You Change The Way You Plan For Your Future?

Should you change the way you plan for your future? That depends on your individual situation. Here are some suggestions.

Protect your loved ones. Don't neglect your financial and estate planning. Review your life, health, disability, and property insurance policies. Is your coverage adequate? Are your beneficiaries appropriate? Make sure your will is up to date, guardians are named for young children, and you have a medical directive and durable power of attorney. These are important steps you can take to protect your loved ones.

Stay the course. The stock market has been extremely volatile in the past few weeks. While no single investment strategy is right for everyone, successful investors don't panic in a market downturn. Instead, they use the decline to add to their portfolio at a lower cost. The most important thing you can do is to make sure your portfolio is properly diversified. Continuous investing techniques such as dollar-cost averaging smooth out the peaks and valleys of any investment cycle over time.

Don't fall for charity scams. The terrorist attacks have brought out the best in people and, in some cases, the worst in people. To help ensure your money will reach the people who need it, it always makes sense to investigate a charity before you make a donation. Ask the charity to provide you with information about its charitable mission, how it spends the money it raises, and proof that your contribution is tax deductible.

Protect your credit history. Business operations have been disrupted for many companies. Allow some extra time this month for your payments to arrive. Follow up with your mortgage company, credit card company, and other companies you do business with to make sure your payment was received and properly credited to your account.
