CASE QUESTIONS

 

1. The Phico claims processing system is partly based on electronic image management.

A. What is an electronic image management (EIM) system? How does it differ from a regular computer (alphanumeric) system?
B. Outline the specific parts of the Phico image processing system. Include where it's located, how it works, and who uses it.
C. What was Phico’s business problem that imaging was to solve? Be specific and support.
D. Was imaging processing the best solution for their business problem? Why or why not? Support.

2. Phico also uses EDI in their claims processing system.

A. How does EDI probably work in this application? Explain.
B. Since they also had image processing, was EDI appropriate? Why or why not? Support your position.

3. One of the old systems was on a minicomputer (AS400 with terminals) and one was on a LAN.

A. Was the new system on a minicomputer or a LAN? Support.
B. Draw a diagram of ALL hardware and communication links of the new system (at Mechanicsburg headquarters only). Be sure to show the DASD (magnetic disk) storage as well as the Optical storage and the workstations and how they are inter-connected.
C. Was this the best configuration for Phico? Be specific.

4. Lotus Notes is used for several purposes in the system.

A. Identify and briefly discuss at least four specific uses of Notes at Phico.
B. Are these appropriate for this type of system in this type of application (claims processing)? Support.
