Reducing Vulnerability to Network Attacks
In Small Business

    An October, 2000 study by Gartner Group states that over half of small and mid-sized businesses maintaining their own computer networks will be victimized by a successful externally-initiated cybercrime within the next three years. Of these, 60 percent will be unaware of the attack.

    Gartner recommends the following initial steps to strengthen network security:

• Contract a specialized security firm to conduct a security risk assessment
• Install a firewall that does not require an on-site security expert to maintain
• Scan all incoming e-mail for viruses
• Utilize a central machine for all outside communications contacts including modems, internet, and remote access.
