Wireless Networks Pose High Security Risks

The use of wireless networking, even for one link on your business network, can expose your entire network to hackers and those seeking to steal business secrets.

Sales of wireless networking devices more than doubled in 2000 and are expected to double again in 2001. The convenience of connecting workstations, laptops, and even PDAs without wires has offset the higher costs of wireless connections and led to rapid growth in both business and home uses.

Unfortunately, this convenience has driven many to use wireless network connections without considering the security implications and without consulting with qualified networking experts. According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal (April 27, 2001), without proper security, low tech hackers or business spies can easily access your e-mail and files from outside your building with cheap, easy-to-use laptops. Experts quoted in the article say even many large companies expose themselves by improper network security setups.

Worse, outsiders can probably gain access to corporate passwords, log on to servers, and take over your networks through unguarded wireless network connections.

The threat is compounded as many users confuse antivirus software (which provides no security other than to stop viruses) with network and access security. These users believe that their antivirus protects them from external hacker and espionage attacks - which it doesn't.
